Tips for a Successful Last Minute Summer Move

If you were planning on moving this summer, but haven’t yet executed your move, you’re probably feeling the heat! As August races by, the opportunity for a summer move is dwindling. There are many reasons people choose to move in the summer.

Many people choose to move in the summer because of the weather. Packing up your home and completing all the last minute tasks associated with a big move is much easier and more enjoyable in temperate weather. Many others move during the summer because vacation days and shorter Fridays mean more time to pack and prepare for moving day. And then there are families who execute summer moves to avoid disruption to the school year.

Of course, there are also individuals who scramble to execute last minute summer moves because of professional and logistical necessity. In short, whether you just got a job that necessitates moving to another state or you have to move to take care of a parent who has fallen sick, life happens. Whatever your reason for needing to move, the pressure of a last minute summer move can be stressful.

Last minute moves are always more pressurized than typical moves, but last minute summer moves are especially tricky. That’s because summer is the absolute busiest time of year to move!

All Jersey Moving & Storage has been helping families with residential moves for 30 years! While we always encourage individuals and families to book their moves in advance, we understand that sometimes people must move quickly. Here are some practical tips to help ensure a successful last minute move this summer:

Act immediately. Because summer is a peak moving season, it’s important to call you preferred local moving company if you want to squeeze your move in before the end of summer. Reach out as soon as possible to secure your moving date of choice. The most experienced and reputable moving companies fill up very quickly.

At All Jersey Moving & Storage we try to accommodate your last minute and weekend moves whenever we can, but we recommend securing your moving date ASAP to ensure you can move on your schedule.

Be flexible. When people book their move well in advance, they are generally able to secure their first choice professional moving company. However, if you’re squeezing in a last minute move, your favorite moving company simply may not have availability. To find an experienced, trustworthy moving company, ask friends and family for personal recommendations. You can also check the Better Business Bureau for well recommended movers in your area.

If you are dead set on moving with a particular moving company that isn’t available on your desired moving date, you may have to be flexible about the date and time of your move (if that’s a possibility). The more flexible you are, the greater the likelihood that you’ll get to work with your professional moving company of choice.

Invest in packing and unpacking services. With just a few weeks left of summer, if you’re determined to fit in a summer move you need to act fast. One of the largest tasks involved in planning a move is packing and unpacking. If you have limited time but want to ensure that all your furniture and belongings are packed and unpacked safely and securely, consider investing in partial or complete packing and unpacking services. All Jersey Moving & Storage offers these services to help alleviate the burden of moving and ensure all items being moved are packed with the utmost care. This service can be especially helpful for busy parents, seniors, and professionals.

Board your pet. Although professional movers will take care of your moving needs on moving day, it’s a busy and even hectic time. You likely won’t have the presence of mind to properly care for and attend to your pet. Your pet may also be spooked or agitated by all the unfamiliar faces and unusual activity. Boarding your pet will simplify your move whatever the season!

It is an especially good idea to board your pet on moving day during a last minute summer move. In the heat of the summer, your pet is more likely to get dehydrated (especially if you keep them outdoors for longer periods than usual while your movers are at your home). If boarding your pet isn’t an option, you may want to ask a friend to pet sit so you can focus on other aspects of the move. If your pet will be home with you, schedule regular reminders to give your pet food, water and outdoor rest breaks on moving day. It’s also important to make sure they are in a cool part of the home, out of the way of your professional moving team.

Prepare your kids for moving day. To execute your last minute summer move safely and efficiently, it's preferable to have a select few people around on moving day to direct the movers. If you can arrange for family or friends to watch your kids or take them on a special day-trip, that will give you peace of mind that they'll be safe and occupied. If that’s not an option, consider hiring a babysitter who can watch them while you’re busy with other tasks.

Another way to ensure that moving day goes smoothly is to leave out a few changes of clothes, toys and games, and plenty of snacks for the kids to enjoy after the rest of their belongings and the kitchen has been packed up. Remember that during a summer move, it’s important to have an easily accessible bag stocked with your child’s sunscreen, hat, water bottle, a change of clothing, indoor activities for when it’s too hot to play in the backyard (such as a coloring book and markers, paperback books, or video games) and outdoor activities for when you need them out of the movers’ way (such as chalk, a soccer ball, or a frisbee).

Check out our moving tips. The All Jersey Moving & Storage team highly recommends that you check out our Packing Tips Guide, especially if packing and unpacking services aren’t in your budget right now. Designed by All Jersey’s seasoned movers, the packing guide features tricks of the trade we have learned over our decades of experience helping individuals and families execute successful, minimally stressful moves. You’ll learn the optimal way to pack everything including live plants, rakes and brooms, lawnmowers, antiques and artwork, flammables and combustibles, small and fragile items, drawers and cabinets, and more. We also share strategies for how to properly label your boxes in a clear and organized fashion to minimize confusion and chaos when you arrive at your new home.

Donate belongings you no longer want or need. It is inevitable that during the packing process you will come across furniture and other items that you will no longer want or have a use for in your new home. With just a few weeks of summer remaining, you may not have the time to sell your items online or arrange a moving sale. A more expedient way of getting rid of unwanted items in reasonable or good condition is to donate them. Ask your local mover for recommendations of local charities that will pick up these items from your home and ensure they wind up in the hands of individuals and families in need. If you have items you can’t or don’t wish to bring with you to your new home but are too valuable to give away or will be of use in the future, consider storing them short-term or long-term at a secure containerized storage facility.

Weigh the pros and cons of a fall move. If your summer plans make moving impossible or the thought of scrambling to execute a last minute move is overwhelming, fall is another ideal season to schedule your home or office move. In fact, some prefer fall moves because fall isn’t a peak moving season and local moving companies may charge slightly lower rates. Professional movers are also more likely to have greater availability, increasing the likelihood that you can move on your date of choice. In order to secure your desired moving date in the fall months, act immediately. Find a reputable moving company like All Jersey Moving & Storage today for a complimentary quote.

Make the move fun. If you’ve been putting off your summer move because the thought of moving is overwhelming, you aren’t alone. No one puts moving on their summer bucket list for the sheer fun of it. Moving a home full of contents while juggling other personal and professional responsibilities is really tough – that’s the reality. But if you must move before the end of the summer, there are small things you can do to make the experience for enjoyable.

Of course, hiring professional movers and investing in packing/unpacking services will result in a less stressful (and therefore more enjoyable!) move. You can also blast your favorite summer jams and drink a glass of wine while you pack. You can involve your kids in the packing process by making packing challenges and offering prizes or other incentives for getting the job done. As moving day nears and you can’t prepare meals in your box-filled kitchen, you can seize the opportunity to order takeaway from local restaurants you’ve always been meaning to try. And of course, you can incentivize friends and family to help you pack for your last minute summer move by ordering a few gourmet pizzas and cases of beer or having a quick and easy backyard BBQ (nothing fancy!) after you’ve finished packing.
